The Evolution of the Statehood Quarter Program

The Statehood Quarter Program, initiated by the United States Mint from 1999 to 2008, aimed to celebrate each state and provide insight into its history.

Featuring a portrait of George Washington on the obverse and a unique design on the reverse for each state, these quarters became a fascinating collection for enthusiasts.

The reverse designs were crafted to commemorate distinctive aspects of each state, be it historical, geographical, or sentimental.

Striking five sets of state quarters annually, the Mint followed the sequence in which states joined the Union.

In total, around 34.3 billion state quarters were minted and circulated, with each state receiving at least 400 million quarters.

Certain state quarters have gained higher value and demand, often due to differences in mintage, as some states had more coins issued than others.

Quarters from states like Maine, Oklahoma, Missouri, Wisconsin, and Alabama are considered more challenging to acquire.

In contrast, those from New Mexico, Iowa, Minnesota, Florida, Michigan, and Arkansas are more common, with over half a billion quarters minted for each.

While collecting state quarters is a popular hobby, most quarters from the program are generally valued at face value.

However, some collectors are willing to pay substantial amounts for error coins and rare quarters in exceptional condition. Here’s an overview of the most expensive state quarters:

State Quarters Worth Money List

1 –  2006 P Nebraska State Quarter

The 2006 P Nebraska quarter holds the distinction of being the 37th coin in the Statehood Quarter Program.

On the reverse side, you’ll find a captivating scene featuring a covered ox-drawn wagon carrying excursionists passing by the iconic Chimney Rock. The design also captures the essence of the blazing Nebraska sun.

The top of the quarter displays the inscriptions “Nebraska” and “1867,” signifying the year the state joined the Union.

Additionally, the words “Chimney Rock,” the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and the release year are intricately engraved.

While the majority of these quarters are commonly found in circulated condition and are valued at around their face value of $0.25, those in mint state are much rarer and can command prices ranging from hundreds to thousands of dollars.

An exceptional example, graded MS68, fetched an impressive $2,350 at an auction in 2017.

2 – 1999 P Georgia State Quarter Deep Die Cap, Double Struck

Die cap errors are an intriguing phenomenon that happens when a coin becomes wedged onto the die, and the die proceeds to strike other coins.

This unusual event leads to the obstructed design on the die, causing subsequently struck coins to display a blank or fuzzy obverse or reverse side, depending on where the coin is stuck.

The Georgia state quarter experienced such an error when a Georgia quarter adhered to the reverse die.

As a result, the die struck a blank planchet at least twice on the reverse side, creating a distorted and mushy reverse design.

Among these errors, the 1999 P Georgia state quarter stands out as exceptionally rare.

A coin graded MS65 fetched an astonishing record-breaking price of $4,200 in 2022.

3 – 2008 D New Mexico State Quarter

In 2004, the Mint produced a total of 244,400,000 New Mexico quarters across its Philadelphia and Denver facilities.

Notably, the quarters minted in Denver boasted a superior strike, featuring full details and an appealing finish compared to their counterparts from Philadelphia.

This distinction makes the Denver-minted coins more valuable, especially in mint state.

However, obtaining a 2008 D New Mexico state quarter in mint state can prove to be quite challenging.

The population further diminishes at the MS67 grade, and anything higher than this is exceptionally rare.

The rarity of the 2008 D New Mexico quarter is evident to the extent that even an example in a lower mint state, graded MS62, can command a significant value, fetching as much as $2,500.

4 – 2004 P Texas State Quarter

The 2004 P Texas State Quarter, the 28th in the series, was released on June 1, 2004.

A notable variety of this coin that adds to its value is the 2004 P Texas Grease Strike Through Error.

This error occurs when grease obstructs the recesses of the striking die, resulting in obscured images during the coin-striking process.

The 2004 P Texas state quarter with a grease strike-through error is considered rare. An exceptional example, graded MS69, fetched an impressive $10,000 in a sale.

Even without such an error, a Texas quarter graded MS69 and above holds considerable value, typically around $3,055.

5 – 2006 D North Dakota State Quarter

The North Dakota state quarter, released on August 28, 2006, holds the 39th position in the Statehood Quarters series.

In circulated condition, these quarters generally hold a value close to their face value, and you might find them easily in everyday transactions.

Higher mint state grades are less common for the North Dakota quarter, with only a limited number available in MS60 and above.

As the grade increases, the population becomes scarce. Examples in MS67 and above are particularly rare.

An exceptionally rare 2006 D North Dakota state quarter, graded MS68, was auctioned in 2017, fetching an impressive $3,760.

6 – 1999 P Pennsylvania MS 67 Struck On An Experimental Planchet

Pennsylvania was among the five states whose quarter was minted on a Sacagawea planchet in 1999 as part of an experiment to determine the optimal alloy combination for the upcoming new coin.

Due to the limited number of these experimental quarters in circulation, they are considered rare and pose a challenge to acquire.

However, their scarcity contributes to their significant value in the numismatic market.

As per the Numismatic Guaranty Company, a 1999 P Pennsylvania MS67 quarter struck on an experimental planchet and graded MS67 can hold a value as high as $2,520.

7 – 1999 P Delaware State Quarter

The 1999 P Delaware state quarter holds a special place as the inaugural coin produced under the Statehood Quarter Program, reflecting the historical significance of Delaware as the first state to join the Union.

Given the state’s unique role in American history, the Delaware Quarter garners considerable interest among collectors aiming to complete their state quarters collection.

Predictably, many of these coins were preserved by collectors upon release. As a result, acquiring the Delaware state quarter in mint state condition can prove to be a challenging task.

The scarcity of this quarter in mint state grades contributes to its substantial value. A specific example, graded MS66, fetched an impressive $4,888 in a 2008 auction.

8 – 1999 P Connecticut State Quarter

The 1999 P Connecticut state quarter holds a distinctive status as part of the experimental planchets intended for the Sacagawea dollar. These coins, viewed as errors, are exceptionally rare due to the Mint producing only a limited quantity.

Several characteristics set apart a regular Connecticut state quarter from one struck on a Sacagawea planchet.

The error coin is notably heavier and thicker than the standard 25-cent coin. Additionally, while the regular coin exhibits a greenish hue, the error quarter possesses a golden color.

Another distinguishing feature is the edge – the regular Connecticut quarter has a reeded edge with vertical lines, while the error coin features a smooth edge.

A PCGS report highlighted a significant sale in 2018, where a 1999 P Connecticut state quarter graded MS69 fetched an impressive $10,500.

9 – 2004 D Wisconsin State Quarter: Extra Leaf Low

The Statehood Quarters Program had only a few coin varieties, enhancing the value of any error coins within this program.

One of the exceptionally rare varieties is the 2004 Wisconsin Extra Leaf Quarters. The low and high leaf varieties exhibit an additional maize husk on the left, with one hanging lower and the other positioned slightly higher.

This additional husk is a substantial anomaly and is considered an error because it is not present on regular Wisconsin state quarters. The Wisconsin extra leaf quarters stand out as the most significant minting errors in the entire state quarters series.

A notable auction in 2020 featured a 2004 D Wisconsin state quarter extra leaf-low graded MS67, which sold for a remarkable $6,000.

10 – 2000 P South Carolina State Quarter

The South Carolina P state quarter, released in 2000, holds significance as the 8th coin in the State Quarter Program.

While these quarters are considered rare, their highest value is found in mint state. To acquire these valuable specimens, enthusiasts may need to invest time and effort in searching through mint sets, original coin bags, and new bankrolls to uncover the limited number of examples graded MS68 and above.

As per the Professional Coin Grading Service, the number of South Carolina P state quarters graded and certified is less than 500, with only a few attaining the grade of MS69. An exceptional discovery in 2018 revealed an MS69 example, valued at $8,000.

11 – 2003 D Maine State Quarter

The U.S. Mint introduced the Maine State Quarter on June 2, 2023, marking the 23rd state quarter in the series. Produced at the Denver mint, these quarters are readily available in circulated condition.

However, acquiring Maine quarters in mint state proves to be a considerable challenge due to their exceptional rarity.

Examples graded MS67 or higher are particularly scarce, making any discovery of such coins a stroke of luck. In a notable auction in 2017, a 2003 D Maine state quarter graded MS68 fetched a price of $2,300 at Heritage Auctions.

12 – 1999-P Experimental Delaware State Quarter

In 1999 and 2000, the United States Mint conducted an experiment, striking some state quarters on different alloys to determine the best alloy for the upcoming Sacagawea dollar in 2000.

Five states, namely Delaware, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Georgia, were part of this experiment in 1999.

The Mint produced only a small quantity of these experimental alloy quarters, rendering them exceptionally rare and, consequently, highly valuable.

Among these, the 1999 P Delaware State Quarter, minted in Philadelphia, stands out as one of the most valuable state quarters in the Sacagawea experimental alloy series. An MS66-graded example of this coin set an auction-breaking record, selling for $4,888.
